Lutfor Rahman Opu
Founder & Chairman, Fortress Developments Ltd.
In a feature for The Daily Star's Safer Living supplement, Lutfor Rahman Opu, Founder and Chairman of Fortress Developments Ltd., shared how Fortress approaches safety as a commitment that lasts the full life of a building — not a single step in construction.
Safety from the ground up
Every project begins with geotechnical and hydrological studies before design starts. Material quality is controlled throughout construction, and after handover, Owners' Associations carry out regular mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural checks.
Built for earthquakes and fire
Fortress projects follow BNBC 2020 and ACI codes, using structural analysis software, optimised shear-wall layouts and ductile detailing. Fire protection includes dedicated fire-refuge areas, certified fire-rated doors, automatic sprinklers and pressurised firefighting stairwells.
Safety is a commitment that lasts the full life of a building.
Designed to be sustainable
Passive design for natural ventilation and daylight, non-fired concrete blocks, low-VOC paints, and rainwater harvesting with proper drainage to prevent waterlogging.
Transparency buyers can verify
Inspections at critical stages such as foundation pouring and column casting, material test certificates from BUET or MIST laboratories, structural certifications and digital progress reports.
Looking ahead
The Chairman called for stricter BNBC enforcement, digital permitting, green-building tax incentives, wider use of precast technology and green steel, and closer collaboration between developers and universities.
